On another boiling hot Saturday, Snitterfield Snipers strutted out for their first league/home match of the season. On a day full of surprises, Fruity appeared from the changing rooms sporting a pair of unfeasibly tight shorts and Az ‘actually’ appeared. Due to a bad crop of injuries and an influx of new players, the Snipers started the day with a new look 4-4-2 formation. With league debuts for Paul Jeffries, Matt Henson, Aaron Lea and Mark Mckinney. The opponents were FISCC reserves, recently relegated from division 1.
First Half:
Fiscc Res started the game brightly, with good movement, and fast accurate passing. The Fiscc forwards stretched the Snipers back four, with good movement and pace. At times the Snipers were guilty of giving the ball away and squandering possession, with Fiscc seeking to capitalise by feeding their strikers early and counter-attacking. The Snipers back line held firm though and the match was even, both sides having early chances and defending well. The match came alive when Brad slotted a ball through the Fiscc defence and it was the impressive debutant Matt Henson that pounced at close range to open the scoring. 1-0 to the Snipers.
The Snipers hard working midfield of Harry Mckinney, Paul Jeffries, Matt Green and Dino were also beginning to cause Fissc problems, especially down both wings. However, it was the visitors who replied with another quick attack and clinical finish. Score 1-1.
Both sides continued to create chances and Thierry pulled off a couple of trademark super saves. 1-1 would have been a fair half time result, but a foul and resulting free kick, allowed Snitterfield to again take the lead. John Wiley floated in a superb free kick deep from the right, which was met at the far post by Jake who headed the ball back across the face of goal and in. 2-1 to the Snipers.
2nd Half
The start of the 2nd half, saw Jake give way to new forward Mark Mckinney and Az replaced Thierry in goal. The Snipers back line was solid throughout the 2nd half, especially the new central defensive partnership of Mark Clarke and Fruity Stu. A partnership so close, they even cleared the same goal bound shot from the line! Az gave a commanding performance in goal, with good distribution but was hardly tested as the Snipers dominated the 2nd half. The midfield were beginning to inject some real attacking venom into the play. Harry and Dino caused a real threat again down the flanks, whilst the tireless duo of Paul and Matt Green also caused problems and defended very well. Matt Henson and Mark Mckinney proved to be a real handful up front, with Marks experienced play leading the team by example and setting the platform for a two goal bombardment of Fissc. Some superb crosses and Fruitys unfeasibly long throw ins caused Fisscs defence to creak and then snap, with Paul Jefferies stealing in a ‘glancing’ header and Mark Mckinney getting awarded a goal mouth scramble. Harry Mckinney did his best to match his senior, firing off a couple of rockets that to be fair the Fiscc keeper saved brilliantly. Fiscc simply seemed to run out of ideas and appetite for the game, a much more comfortable half for the Snipers.
